Stay in gear with these useful tips

Taking good care of your vehicle’s gearbox is absolutely essential – regardless of whether it is a manual or an automatic. Here are some things that you can do to extend the life of your vehicle’s gearbox, which has the potential to both save you money and increase the resale value of your vehicle.

Let the engine warm up

Before setting off, let the engine warm up for a few minutes. This is even more important in the winter, when extreme cold temperatures can cause the components in your engine to sieze.

Check your transmission fluid

Knowing the location of your transmission fluid’s receptacle is very important. With the engine idling, inset the dipstick for a few seconds, remove it, clean it, and insert it again. If the fluid is showing up as bright red and clear, this is an indication that the fluid is good. If the colour is dark or if the fluid has a rotten smell, you would need to replace it very soon.

When you do change your transmission fluid, it is recommended that you use the type that your manufacturer recommends. If you need assistance, a professional workshop such as Pace Auto Services can assist in checking and changing your transmission fluid.

Automatic gears

If you drive a car with an automatic gearbox, ensure that you always select the “park” gear when the vehicle is switched off and stationary. This will keep it from rolling backwards or forwards. Do not forget to also make use of the handbrake. If you change automatic gears while driving, it can place a strain on the gearbox and lead to expenses down the line.

Check your differentials

If you experience one of the following, you may have an issue with your diffs that needs attention:

  • Tyre damage
  • Difficult handling
  • Vibrations
  • Grinding gears
  • Winding noises

If you believe that your front or rear diffs are worn out, bring it into a workshop for a technician to have a look at.
