Pace Car Rental is a specialist long term car rental business. We have found that several branches of various brands charge different rates for the same service so we have narrowed it down and publish this for you so that you can save money on your service.

First thing to note is that although most places charge the same price for parts, the price of labour varies by branch. The closer you are to the middle of Sandton or Pretoria east, the more expensive your service will be. The cheapest we have found so far for VW’s is Princesses in Springs R475/hour. The most expensive is VW Hatfield in Hatfield R775/hour.

For a standard 30,000 kilometre service for a VW Polo Vivo you will need the following parts at the following approximate prices as at 16 August 2013.

  • 1 Screw – R 18
  • 1 x Airfilter – R 150
  • 1 x Oil Filter – R 177
  • 1 x Pollen Filter – R 204
  • 3,7 litres Oil at R94 per litre – R 350**
  • 0.9 hours labour at R575/hour – R 517
  • Total cost excluding VAT – R 1417

The total cost of your 30,000km service including VAT should be about R1,616 including VAT

**make sure they charge for 3,7litres.  They use a tank with a pump, so they can’t say they used 4 x 1 litre bottles.

You might get asked to change the brake pads.  I will give you a car rental fleet manager tip, Never do this at the dealership!.  Most vehicles are released with brand of brake pads called “ATE” which are readily available at any Speedy outlet or any neighbourhood brake place.  Just go to one of these and ask for ATE brake pads and you will save more than 50% of the price of the dealership for the exact same product.  If you want to go all out ask for a premium brand like Ferodo it will still be cheaper.

Over and out and see you next week for the 45,000km service for a Polo Vivo.  Please let me know what other makes you need info on, we have the following brands in our car rental fleet, Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10, Nissan Tiida, Chev Ute, NP300 bakkies, Polo’s and Toyota Quantums.
